Who exactly is Nikita working for? The government? The French government?

Why would it matter to you? Any secret agency with secret assassination jobs would be good enough. The story is about Nikita, her plight and her transformation, her getting a new lease on life then getting to the point where it is so upsetting to her that she runs away and hides. The agency she works for is immaterial.

Thanks, that makes a lot of sense. I should have known that. :o) It's the character, her growth, her challenges that matter, not the events, the whole complicated business she's involved in.
