Nikita....an ugly bitch with electric shock hair

the scenes where she screams abuse at the judges....she looks like Pete Docherty did when he turned up for drug charges earlier this year....and the bit where she impersonates a man rowing a Gondola made me want to pour acid over her the way the brillant Jean Reno does later on to victims in the movie....a heroine that i did'nt care for at all. She was a pain in the arse.

At the beginning she is annoying and utterly random, but as the film progresses we see something transpire that is usually side-stepped in modern cinema, it's character development! I think she's a sort of crazy, scatty little girl who grows and matures into an adult woman by the end. I certainly warmed to Nikita by the end of the film. The gondola bit was cringeworthy however, i'm with you there.

reply

Agree. At the beginning, Nikita is just an annoying and ugly bitch. But later when she is transformed into an elegant and refined murderess she is far more tolerable.
Despite the fact that she becomes an assassin, she is way more likable than when she was just a wild junkie.

reply

ya at the start she looked totally terrible and was horribly annoying but I guess that was the point, and I laughed at the docherty comparision. Later she defintly looked alot better but not my type at all in looks or additude, I also did warm up to her alot and the whole part with jean reno was awesome to say the least.

reply

Ah ha, Pete Dohert's a junky Nikita is also a junky so I'd say she was doing a fairly good job there. You're not meant to feel particular empathy for her character at the start, its meant to grow (ironically) as she learns to be a lady, an assasin. The point is she's portraying a real person in increasingly impossible circumstances, not a sexual object to drool over. Watch some american cinema (perhaps Mr and mrs Smith or whatever), plenty of plastic and silicon beauty there...

reply

i must be odd then, because in a strange way, i hated they way they 'normalised' the wild nikita, and turned her into a sanitised version of a killing machine. i thought she looked more natural in her wild state, and never really adapted to being 'normal'.
in a way reminiscent of alex in clockwork orange, they used some pretty obnoxious methods to kill the animal and spunk out of an original and turned her into a clone.

i love the film, and really enjoy the mix of darkness, humour, style and bits of uglyness which hollywood airbrushes out of movies, but which european cinema has the courage to leave in.
and in this respect, the non-standard beauty of nikita is key.
she isnt meant to be a model. she is a freak. that is the point of her.
if she was an airbrushed beauty it wouldnt work as well.

Uhm, "Nikita" isn't always such a sympathetic character, and not always so pretty, but Anne Parillaud is pretty. I don't think they say it as they were casting an ugly actress.

Like most people don't find Charlize Theron repulsive when she's off duty.

reply

Yes i did. The soundtrack by Eric Serra was fantastic. And the other reason i watched Nikita is because of Jean Reno's turn as Victor The Cleaner....i saw this film about a year after i saw Leon (The Professional).

Ok. There is just something timeless and better photographed about Leon. And Jean Reno deserved every single bit of acclaim he received. Natalie Portman was gorgeous in this movie. Would you have turned her away from the door when shes begging for Leon to open it? great moment. In fact Leon has lots of emotion that convinces. I recently obtained a copy of the extended version of this film and it makes a great movie even better. Also, Gary Oldman's D.E.A. agent villain is a great bad guy, Hitchcock once said that you can't have a thriller without good villainy and Oldman pulled it off here.

You see compared to Leon, Nikita is really a cold and distant film to me...i wasnt really taken with Anne Paullard and did not care about her relationships or personal demons. However, its a watchable film with good sequences but next to Leon it was like an appetizer before the main course.

Natalie Portman was gorgeous in this movie.

Is that why you find Anne Parillaud ugly? Because you prefer children?

reply

I go back and forth as to which I like better, Nikita or Leon(love them both). Reno, Portman, and Oldman all shined in Leon and the action sequences were breathtaking. On the other hand, I think I liked the character arc for Nikita a bit more. I thought Leon had more of an epic comic-book feel while Nikita was slightly more focused and down-to-earth.

I agree. Not the preittest woman in the world but a damn hot chick with a gun lmao i have an admiration for women who can handle a gun and kick arse... shes a pretty cool heroine really... men shudnt admire her for her looks, but for her ability to control situations using the right amount of violence... very impressive film. Anne Parillaud was really beautiful in this movie. At first she was obviously meant to look scary and unappealing but after she'd been set free from the training place she looked stunning.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with the actress playing Nikita, she was very attractive and the character she was playing (in the beginning anyhow) had to look the way it did or it wouldn't be believable.

I'm also kind of baffled by the Natalie Portman comments because she was only 12 when "Leon - The Professional" was filmed, so not only is it borderline pedophilic behavior to write something like that but you obviously need to reevaluate why you even watched a film such as Nikita if you lack the basic elements of character development.

Nikita was totally hot.

A heroine hooked on heroin, eh?

Lol! Anne Parillaud could NEVER be considered ugly. I wouldn't call her a Barbie-doll type, (and that's good!) but her sex appeal, sensuality, and vulnerability, make her SOOOO attractive...that, and she's cute as hell with a great little figure.
