How did the buliding blow up, I don't get it? and how did they survive?

Can someone please expain, I think I missed something.

The building blew up because when Elaine found the gun and started shooting, she missed and hit one of the gas lights putting out the flame. This, combined with all of the candles and the fireplace caused the floor to blow up. As to how some got out, that I'm not sure about. I would have to assume there was an exit besides the service elevator..

Thanks for clearing that up. I didn't realize the significance of the gas lamp. Come to think about it now; there's nothing supernatural in this movie - only people believing in the supernatural.

Well, one of the people got out, and this female was a desk clerk for a Seattle hotel at the very end. Everyone else was killed while Elaine escaped.

The exit besides the service elevator you are referring to is the set of hidden service stairs that the staff used when they arrived on the floor, shortly after Elaine wanders around the corner from the elevator. They come out of a room down the hall from the service elevator.
