I prefer this over the original

By a wide margin. I would even go as far to say that if you haven't seen either one, don't even bother watching the original.

I really loved both, but I have to say I actually preferred the remake overall; the thing I think this remake really improves on is the character of Barbara; in the original she becomes a total emotional wreck who never recovers from her ordeal and is basically a vegetable the whole time; here, she goes from being a meek, weak willed person to a total badass who's determined to survive no matter what (just an major improvement over the incarnation we saw in the original, who basically was useless to no end). I liked how in this one Barbara actually helps Ben, rather than just simply being a hindrance.

Well said :) I also think all of the characters in this version are more believable and altogether well acted.

I like both but I do prefer this one because the ending is better.

I enjoy both but I think the original has a more bleak, darker atmosphere so I enjoy it more.

I also prefer this one, and by far. And it's also because of the Barbara character. She's just so incredibly stupid in the original that it's just annoying. I'm not someone to demand women characters HAVE to be smart and strong, but really, her uselessness was just too much. Plus it's pretty boring for the first half hour or something.

I saw this one first, and was quite disappointed when I watched the original. Though it does get better midway through and it has a very good ending...

^Same here. I caught the original for the first time in years the other night and (like the first time I saw it) I lost interest until the second half. The remake held my attention from start to finish.

Both of them were perfect for their time. With its near-amateurish photography, the original has almost a documentary feel to it, as if you're watching these things really happen to a group of people. That enhances the terror, in my opinion. And I thought the remake had stronger performances all around, good FX and great direction by Savini. When you look at some of the other (really crappy) horror remakes in recent years, this movie beats any of them hands down. And it stays with you after it's over.

The original one was great, but this one was even better. Not only is it in color, but it's scarier, more realistic, and has better acting and special effects.

I definitely prefer this over the original. I liked the characters a lot more. But I do prefer the originals ending vs this one.

So do I. I love the original (saw it in a movie theater last week) but this one is just all around better. Especially with the characters. In the original, all the women are basically useless. It was great that the original was progressive as far as Ben is concerned what with him being a black lead but that fact never called upon during the actual film but the women are all useless. Barbra is catatonic and as someone else said basically ends up a vegetable. She's helpful for a brief moment in the beginning helping Ben board up a window but then nothing. Helen basically sits around sticking it to her husband and Judy is the worst, her insisting on joining Tom is basically the only reason they both died.

In the remake they all serve a purpose and are active in the plot. Barbra of course but Helen is even working toward her own goal/end trying to find the key. And Judy at least helps boarding the place up. It was just nice to see all the character active in the remake.

No road goes on forever.

This is garbage compared to the 1968 classic masterpiece. The 1990 remake is perhaps okay as a light walker film, but pales in comparison to the original.

That is your opinion, but it is wrong :)

You just said my opinion is "wrong" yet by you admitting it's an opinion, you're wrong yourself.
