Why did they way so long to do a sequel?

It took 8 years for us to get a sequel for The NeverEnding Story which meant Barrett Oliver, Noah Hathaway and Tami Stronach were too old to re-play their roles. Instead we got Jonathan Brandis, Kenny Morrison and Alexandra Johnes (Johnes is barely in the movie anyway).
