The Merengue

Does anyone know how Steve Martin learned the dance moves for merengue? Did he go to the Dominican Republic to prepare for his role, or did they hire a dominican instructor? Can someone answer this? I don't see it in the trivia section, and being a dominican, it would be cool to get some information about that. Thanks!
