Based on Henry Hill...?

How is that the case?

reply

Its based off the Nicholas Pileggi book "Wiseguys" which is about Henry Hill, which occurs after he enters Witness Protection. Also Nora Ephron,Pileggi's wife, wrote the screenplay.

Hill says in the follow up to wiseguys, Gangsters and Goodfellas;

'In 1990, the same year Goodfellas came out she (Nora Ephorn) had a little movie released called My Blue Heaven, starring Steve Martin, about a New Yorker in Witness Protection out west - just like i had been in Omaha. When I saw it I flipped because she used some of the stuff I had told her on the phone for her movie scenes. She took a combination of me and Michael Franceze, another rat she had read about in the papers. I never got a penny for it, but Nick had been so generous with me that i just let it slide'

This is seriously the coolest bit of trivia I've read in a long time. I loved this movie as a kid. It's good, clean fun with two masters of that particular craft: Steve Martin and Rick Moranis (although SM can throw f-bombs with the best of them).

Now I have even more of a reason to love MBH.

Well, Henry Hill was a low level mobster who went into the witness protection program after agreeing to testify against his higher-ups. That is what the Steve Martin character does here. Of course, that was just the idea that made the film. Then they decided to make it sitcomy.

Henry did marry another woman using his WP name. And when he called to tell Pillegi, he said "Its ok, I didn't marry her under my real name"

Henry Hill did marry another woman under his witness protection name, saw that on the Biography Channel. Nora Ephron who wrote the screenplay for My Blue Heaven was Pillegi's wife.

I like to think of this as a sequel to "The Goodfellas"
