Earwig? *spoiler alert*

Does this movie have a scene where a bug burrows into a guy's ear in the desert, causing him agonizing pain? I saw a scene in a movie like that in the 90s, and I heard that happened to the real John Hanning Speke, so I wanted to figure out if this was that movie. Thanks to anybody who's seen it!

Yes. It's in this film.

I don't think it was an earwig, it was a beetle of some sort.

I saw this scene when I was a kid (7 ou 8) and for months I had to sleep with cotton in my ears, afraid a bug would get in (i still think twice when I go to countryside...)

It bothered Speke so much he poked at it with the point of a compass. He'd shake his head and pieces would come out. When he blew his nose, his ear whistled and the African bearers would laugh. Not easy to be an explorer.

It was a beetle and he destroyed his own hearing. It's cut from this version I am currently watching, rented from Netflix.

Dang. Fortunately I got the long version of "The Far Pavilions" because I knew there was a reader's digest version of that.

Sh-it's a secret!
