spoiler alert: Speke's death

Was Speke's death an accident or suicide?

reply

Your question is the conundrum. Nobody really knows, including historians -- to this day. Part of the intrigue of Speke's character, "real" and in the film.

Would it be too bold of me to suggest that, whenever you give a spoiler alert in the subject line, you should perhaps try to avoid revealing the spoiler at the same time?

Please take this in the good humour intended.

I got the feeling it was suicide. He was humiliated and humbled when he found out that that guy (?) lied to him about Burton. He was so humiliated that he felt he could not face Burton. Of course, I could be wrong, but that's what I got from the film. . .especially the expression of futility on Speke's face.

The film spells out Speke's humiliation from being manipulated by Oliphant, and subsequent suicide.

The manipulation part didn't happen in real-life, but the misunderstandings and mistrust upon returning to England appears to be true.

In defense of the OP, lo these many years later, since Mr Speke was born in 1827 and would not be expected to still be alive more than 175 years later, merely mentioning his death in the subject line is not really all that much of a spoiler, since the post could be about any aspect of said death.

Point well made. OP acquitted on appeal, released from penal colony, and reunited with family. Judge pensioned off. All's well that ends well.

Once at work I was talking about the death of (the real) Spartacus and a couple of knotheads complained that I'd ruined the end of the TV show.
