What the [bleep] is wrong with all these people on IMDB?!?!

Clockers... 6.8?
Crooklyn... 6.5?
Mo Better Blues... 6.3?!?!

These were easily some of the best films of the 1990s...

I agree. There's just something wrong with that. Most of Spike Lee's films deserve at least an 8, because they serve as accurate portrayals of the black community, and of America. Spielberg, Scorsese, and Ron Howard all have their classics. How come Spike Lee can't have his?

But, if you know what I know, I'd say there are some people on this website who deliberately vote down black movies for racially-motivated reasons. That's why I don't take votes on this site seriously at all.

Lee is a very mediocre director, sorry

I don't care if he's black, white, pink or blue... His movies are just not very good

Liking someone's movies because they are black is no better then disliking them for the same reason. His race does not make his movies better or worse. They are what they are, "OK"
And most of his biggest fans are blinded by race, and so is the director.

In a perfect world we would judge people on their work. Not race or religion or whatever. And in that world his movies are just not great, sorry

I say this, because if spike lee was white you wouldn't be trumpeting his work... And that's unfortunate. But again, just as bad as losers saying he sucks for the same reason.

He could be purple for all I care. His movies are just not great.........

** ALL IMO naturally, and just that. – At least that's still not universal :)

I say this, because if spike lee was white you wouldn't be trumpeting his work.

well, it's doubtful that if spike was white he'd have the same body of work.

I absolutely *HATED* "She's Gotta Have It" (why do we insist on glorifying the "playas" and "hos" among us in black movies?)

you're of course entitled to your opinion of the film, but where do you get "playas and hos" from? any sexually liberated woman is a ho?

Jungle Fever" (just plain forgettable),

really? don't even remember sam jackson's oscar worthy role?

i too have been black all of my life, and i too agree that many of spike's characters are very relatable. unfortunately, i've also been able to relate to many of the raced based issues that his characters go through as well.

reply

I find that any discussion of race that veers off into purple has missed the point.

reply

You missed the point. The point is not that we should like him because he's black(in that case we should all like Tyler Perry) the point is many put his movies down because he's black or addresses issues in the black community or depicts black culture in a way that differs from how the mainstream portrays black culture. You're taking the point and twisting it around to fit you're own agenda.

reply

you're own agenda.
If not giving a rats ass what race a director is can be considered an agenda.... What a stupid comment

reply

You rate his films poorly, because he is Black. Tyler Perry sucks. Mario Van Peebles' output is uneven in comparison. Spike Lee is one of the best filmmakers of our time. You're not giving him credit, because he is Black.

Herein lies the problem with a whole lot of black people. Blacks always just assume all criticism or non-praise is just racism. It is like the fan whose team sucks but always blames the refs. No the team just isn't very good. It is a coping mechanism to comfort the fan to shield himself from the fact that he just likes a crappy team. It is that simple.

Black people have been conditioned to believe everything around them is racist.
I'll give you an example that happened to me once. So I think we have all experienced a time where say you are entering a store and the person ahead of you rudely doesn't hold the door open for you. That happens to me every once in a while. I just chalk it up to people being rude. I was then with one of my good friends who is black and that exact thing happened to us as we were entering a convenience store. His first assumption was it is because the guy was racist. So as you see they view everything through the prism of race. Just like how you constantly hear idiots call someone a racist if they criticize Obama.

The sooner this thought process ends, the sooner blacks will start to become a successful community in the USA.

Sorry, I have to agree with toddp-10...and I am a black man. I have not been very impressed with most of Spike's work, and when talking to some other black people, I often feel that I am SUPPOSED to like his movies just because he is black. It doesn't work that way with me. I absolutely *HATED* "She's Gotta Have It" (why do we insist on glorifying the "playas" and "hos" among us in black movies?), didn't much care for "Mo' Better Blues" (to this day, the only thing I can even remember about that film is Joie Lee's character's birthing scene towards the end because it just seemed so overdone and out of place), or "Jungle Fever" (just plain forgettable), and I thought "Malcolm X" didn't do justice to the story of Malcolm X at all, which is a shame since he was complaining that a white director shouldn't be telling that story (like "The Color Purple"). A white director might have done a much better job, though (like "The Color Purple").

The only Spike movies I liked were "Crooklyn" (and I agree that this movie SHOULD be rated much higher), "25th Hour" (absolutely EXCELLENT movie...this one is rated 7.9 out of 10, which is much more accurate), and "Do the Right Thing" (but only grudgingly...the ending of that movie really doesn't make any sense to me, other than to perpetuate racial tension). I've heard "Inside Man" is pretty good, but I have not seen it yet.

I really have to say that I don't agree with this idea that Spike's movies portray the black community as it really is. I don't identify with most of Spike's characters, and I've been black all my life! This is probably why I like "Crooklyn" so much...it is the only movie he has done which DOES give a more accurate picture of the black community because those characters all seemed REAL and living REAL LIVES. I think Spike focuses way too much on the racial aspects of his films, making those issues more of the focus of the film than the actual characters or story. "Crooklyn" had a very different vibe, presenting a rather honest portrait of a family that just so happened to be black, and thus were going through things that perhaps more blacks go through. "25th Hour" is pretty much devoid of "the black story." Spike is just telling a damn good story, and telling it well. It doesn't hurt that he also smartly cast my favorite actor in the lead (Edward Norton).

This was a very good movie, I personally hesitated between 8 and 9. I think Spike Lee is a brilliant director, his direction is so smooth and creative, especially in the 80s-90s. That Statue of Liberty shot with the ferry near the end, man... gorgeous! And he knew it and held the shot. That's what make great directors.
