Can Spike Lee give his characters real names for a change?

Seriously, Bleek and Giant? What's his problem?

reply

No man.. real names would be boring..I love Spikes Unique names! No dick and jame names over here.. Not Isha, Peesha or Kareem names either. Let it be.

reply

Mrstaples, what's your problem? This must be a cultural thing. He makes movies! Don't watch any Spike Lee movies if you have a problem with the names...one of the things I love about Spike's films are the names! You have some issues man.

reply

The characters in this flick are in the music world! I didn't think the names were unreal at all.

Bleek was a nickname. When he and Indigo got married, the preacher used his real name... can't remember what it was, but it wasn't Bleek. Giant is obviously a nickname, too. Just like you'd call a big guy "Tiny." Same goes for "Shadow"... 'cause Wesley Snipes is so dark complected. Now the unusual names are Indigo and Clarke. When this movie came out, Clarke was the hottest thing on the market. A friend of mine named his daughter after Clarke.

reply

I agree. The names are wonderful IMHO. I didn't even realize the comic book references until someone pointed them out.

I could definitely see someone naming their daughter Clarke after her. I'm pretty sure he wasn't the only one either. She's a beautiful woman.

reply

Bleek's real name was Minnefield Gilliam, it was said in the wedding scene.

reply

I read somewhere years ago that Bleek was actually Bill Lee's nickname.

BTW, that gesture Denzel makes throughout the film where he rubs two of his fingers across his lips is something that Louis Armstrong used to do. Just thought I'd point that out.

reply

Actually, at the wedding it sounded more like "Benefield", which would be an easier jump to a nickname such as "Bleek" if the nickname is extended from his name (as opposed to some other way of conjuring a nickname, like calling a big guy "Tiny" as a previous poster mentioned).

I’m not sure but I took the name of Washington’s character, Bleek, to be an intentional misspelling of the word bleak (grim, unhappy, unfriendly, lacking hope, etc.) A reference to his generally somber personality. He isn’t a very happy man and seems lost with respect to everything in his personal life — his work, lovelife and so on — He’s even plagued by a desperate search for greater accomplishment as a musician, as many musicians are.

Giant — A small man with big dreams. Posing as business manager and representative of Bleek and the band.

Shadow — Regarded as second fiddle to Bleek — playing obligato as musician and attempting to be rebound babe magnet of Bleek’s lady friends. He’s under Bleek’s shadow as well as continually striving to escape it. His skin is darker. He’s more or less the primary bad guy of the story.

Left Hand — a suggestion that he’s a top tier pianist. Most play well enough with their right hand. Only the best are as skilled using their left;

Bottom — The bassist. Often regarded to as the "bottom” or "pulse" of a jazz tune. The thing that everything else relies on;

Indigo — The dark-skinned love interest;

Clarke — Not sure how this works in the vein I’m suggesting. Maybe cLARKe, as in singer or a romantic fling)

etc…

i.e. — The names are all double-entendré. They make reference to the position each holds in the story; role of each character in relation to other characters; allusions to highly regarded jazz tunes and artists and perspectives concerned with color-consciousness, financial and professional aspiration problems; violence and romance problems among Black Americans.

Enlightening. Thank you!

Giant might well be a reference to the John Coltrane album, Giant Steps.

I see that one of the AKAs of this movie is A Love Supreme, another Coltrane cut.

·never say never·

reply

Shadow's style of play is very Coltrane-influenced.

Those could be the characters' nicknames for all you know.

I too LOVE the names Spike gives his characters. And what IS a "real name"? My name is Sunni, and people constantly say, thats a cute nickname, but whats your real name? Lol. Either that, or people fail to pronounce it as sunny, as if its something complicated. :)
