It seems like he was trying to ride the success of Silence of the Lambs and the way Tony Hopkins played Hannibal Lecter as the sinister, diabolical, yet intelligent and classy madman why tries to get inside the head of the impressionable professional woman. Anybody else see this?
Mister Frost is about Satan incarnate. He controls people around him to prove to this woman that he is Satan. By the end of it, he gets her to kill him, and then takes over her body.
Yep, Silence of the Lambs came after Mister Frost. But there was the original version of Hannibal Lecktor (this is the correct spelling for this movie) in Manhunter, played by Brian Cox, in 1986. I would say Jeff Goldblum's character would be more like this Lecktor than TSOTL. And I found Anthony Hopkin's Lecter silly and more like someone playing at being brilliant than actually brilliant. I LOVED Brian Cox's smart, low-key, charming Lecktor... wait, what were we talking about?
Just wanted to say that I agree I thought the Cox performance in Manhunter was incredible and it's a shame it's basically 'overlooked' and Hopkins SOTL performance got all the attention.
That said, while I know it's not most people's favorite, I perferred the next film ('Hannibal') in the series over both Manhunter and SOTL (but think they're all great films). I think Anthony Hopkins gave a better (more subtle?) performance in Hannibal than in SOTL.
More like some serious Halloween ripping with the silent killer, wasn't it. More style than substance in this movie although I enjoyed the first half and Goldblum did it really well.
