Cringe worthy

Wow. I'm amazed at the huge following this film has. I have loved the Devil as a character in films. The Devil's Advocate, Angel Heart, even The Prophecy which I didn't like much had a knockout performance by Viggo Mortensen.

The first issue that bothered me was the terrible performances. All of them... and I do believe the poorly written dialogues did nothing to help them out. I was also distracted by how everyone in the movie either needed a hair dresser or a hair conditioner. Their hairstyle was so distracting. Was this how the 90s was supposed to be in the UK? I've seen other films from that era and they looked fine to me.

The one thing that bothered me even more was how freely these lunatics were allowed to roam within the premise. I mean, they're dangerous people with a criminal record. What should we do? Yeah, let's leave them free with knives and forks and other sharp pointed objects so that they can totally do the damage to the psychiatrists because *beep* them, that's why.

This is just my rant and obviously for those of who did enjoy this, I'm happy for you. Just didn't cut it for me.

Respectful responses (should you feel the need to comment) and healthy discussion is welcome. Please try not to be rude, it just reflects poorly on you, nobody else. Also, English is not my first language so grammar nazis, you're wasting your time.

Halfway through but yes this is decidedly second rate. Took a punt on it based on Alan Bates and very largely positive, glowing indeed, reviews - all by dunce fanboys it would seem. Performances apart from Bates and (to an extent) Goldblum truly amateurish - which when it affects the whole cast is always a mark of bad direction. Wasn't prepared either for the very dated, TV-movie feel, though I wouldn't hold that against it if it was half decent.

Agree, the Devil can be top subject matter for a film - Angelheart, The Omen, Rosemary's Baby - but this is just naff.

I wonder which version you both viewed.

The reason I'm curious is because I felt the overseas version contained a few "eye-rolling" lame moments and music cues that the USA version did not.

I far prefer the USA-release edit.

Wait a minute... who am I here?

I actually thought that Jeff Goldblum did a really good job in this. I watched it for the first time back around 1992 and it was the first movie of his that I actually liked.

When I was locked in a mental institution, I was allowed to leave my room and interact with others after I proved that I could behave and not harm myself and others. Doing such things were privileges that had to be earned, and could be revoked if you act up. Frost being able to do so either means people did not see him as a dangerous high security risk or, more likely the case, he brainwashed the staff to let him do so, which would make sense considering letting patients who wouldn't even be allowed shoelaces would not be around sharp objects.
