True... and also more funny, too. Paul's inner thoughts in the novel are sometimes just hilarious. And the book has bits that are darkly humorous, such as Annie giving Paul an old clunker of a typewriter, where all the most used letters soon stop working, leaving lacunae in the typed text which Annie faithfully fills in...

She cut off his foot and blowtorched it to staralize it. Then cut off his finger. Along with lots of psychological torture that includes: making him drink mop water that was dirty or else he wouldn't get his pills, leaving him alone for two days while he couldn't move and didn't have have food or water causing him to drink ha own pee, she also had killed a former lover and numerous hospital patients!
