I think it's blatantly obvious that the hacks that were the Wachowski Brothers took their "original" idea for The Matrix from none other than this B-movie seeing as they were fans of B-movies and also ripped the storyline from Ghost In The Shell. So in other words to answer everyone as to whether The Matrix was an original and unique movie? No it wasn't, the director's took their ideas from Mindwarp and Ghost in the Shell and anyone who disagrees with this will not have seen either films. Because if you watch both you will see clearly that The Matrix is a direct rip-off of both ideas presented in both films.

They were being produced at the same time, The Matrix even re-used certain sets from Dark City. This much I know...

also existenz is like this mindwarp and the others mentioned and others not mentioned i even think i heard somewhere that someone said this movie is a ripoff of the madmax movies but thats only cause of the setting i dont think you can really own a setting maybe an idea like the virtual worlds and stuff but not a setting place or time but whatever is the truth i just know that bruce campbell could kick mel gibsons and keanu reeves asses

Also there was a 1977 movie "Welcome to Blood City", which dealt with people being plugged into a virtual reality.

The Matrix directly borrows the idea of plugging yourself in at the back of the head via some kind of cable/port to a virtual world, while the real world has been decimated by an apocalyptic event. Also, the fact that the characters eat goop that comes out of a machine is very similar.

While the concept of premise of the film is the strikingly similar, the films are vastly different in most other regards. Also, the themes taught by both films are polar opposites.

The protagonist of Mindwarp is taught to accept her lot in life and make the best of it, while the protagonist of the Matrix is taught to challenge the system, break free, and live by his own rules.

Also, the characters in Mindwarp use their virtual world as an entertaining escape from a post apocalyptic world. Whereas the characters in the matrix are held as unwitting captives in their virtual world while they struggle to rebuild their decimated real life existence.

Overall, each film had a vastly different cerebral effect on me. The Matrix made me think "Woah!" a couple of times and kept me entertained with neat action scenes and special effects. Mindwarp was more of a gut wrenching, visceral, twisted trip exploring humanity's baser instincts and needs at a deeper and often much grosser level.

Well, no. not really. Both this and THE MATRIX lift ideas from the 1984 book NEUROMANCER by William Gibson.

Doctor Who was in the Matrix in the 1976 episode The Deadly Assassin.
