Tom is gay...

After watching the film over and over again (especially the last scenes), I think Tom is a homosexual. I think Tom is disappointed, not because Leo got Verna but the other way around(Verna got Leo)

Um... Wrong.

Watching movies while sh!t-faced, and then going off on message boards before you sober up isn't that great of an idea there, Galileo.

I don't think Tom is gay. I'd have an easier time saying that leo is gay or bi. I got just a wince of a vibe in the opening scene w/Tom and the whole "Nobody knows anyone, not that well" quote too. Leo couldn't have Tom (because Tom is Straight) and Maybe he knew about Tom and Verna (how could he not?) and used Verna to get back at him. I'm by no means saying this is fact either. Just a hint of a possibility. He was an old "gangster" and no wife at his late stage. Leo's "got a heart" and isn't your typical iron fist gangster, at least until someone tries to kill him. Could be totally false and irrelevant too.

We also see his jealous rage when Tom confides he was with Verna. Maybe he was jealous for the opposite of what we assume? I mean Verna is a whore, yet she's the Boss GF and soon to be wife (she asks him though). Tom is very loyal, apart from the Verna situation.

The film is centered around 2 love triangles Bernie, Mink and The Dane - Leo, Tom and Verna.

But not all love is physical.

Whose idea was it for the word "Lisp" to have an "S" in it?

I think it's meant to be ambiguous, but there are a LOT of lines in the film that suggest gay subtext between different characters other than the obvious three...

"If we're banging away at Caspar, we better be ready for him to bang back"
"I think you were straight with your frail, I think you were queer with Johnny Caspar, and I think you'd rather join a lady's league than gun a guy down."
"I want to see you squirm. I want to see you sweat a little."
"I need you. Things could be like they were, I know it, I just know it!"
"You's fancy pants all a you's"

Also Albert Finney in drag lol... I think the Coens threw in these intentionally to make us wonder. Maybe Tom's hat represents his desire to remain straight amongst his gay friends? What is the backstory with him, Bernie and Mink? They seem to have some history with each other that we're not made aware of.

Quite exciting, this computer magic!

Many people can see a gay subtext in virtually any movie, if they want to.

However in Miller's Crossing it ain't even subtext - three of the main characters were gay, including the toughest, most ruthless killer in the movie. And yes, J.E. Freeman who played the Dane, was gay and died of AIDS a few years ago.

And just for a punchline - Jon Polito, who played Johnny Caspar so greatly and just passed away this month....was also gay.

Indeed! And I thought of a couple more:

"I reckon I can still trade body blows with any man in this town, except you Tom"
"It's the kiss-off!"

Agreed. But even if the actors were gay, it doesn't mean that the roles they were playing have to be gay.

Tom Cruise and John Travolta approve that message...

Albert Finney in drag? What movie? BTW, you, and lot of other posters are taking sayings from the thirties and misinterpreting them. Those quotations that you list are things I've heard my dad use (he grew up in that era), or have heard many times in old gangsta movies. Unless you're just putting a sick little twist on your lines of quotes 😉....

He loved the movie and dressed in drag in the ladies room scene in which Tom confronts Verna and tells her to stop using Leo to protect her brother and she punches him, and later spend the night together as earlier when Leo was looking for her.

Irony is like goldy or bronzy, but it's made of iron.
