New Orleans NOT New York

As I watched the movie the biggest clue to what city it is would be the one in the majors office. Those are portraits of Andrew Jackson! The savior of New Orleans in war of 1812.

Nice!
is that 'major' or 'mayor'?

Carpe Noctem!

The Coens chose New Orleans for a simple reason, there were large areas where the Real Estate hasn't changed since the early 1900's. They left the film ambiguous but put a few clues in for the viewer if they could catch it.

but it was just filmed there. The film's actual setting is just a prohibition era city, with a definite feel of NY

reply

Tom mentioned the Palisades. Not sure he would've had they been in the south.

reply

Yup. I've always wondered what city this was supposed to be; and that they left it intentionally ambiguous.

But Tom certainly does say to Verna to get out of town and go to the Palisades.

It would be one thing to be in New York and say that. That would make perfect sense.

But to get out of town from New Orleans and go to the Palisades? No f'g way.

I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

reply

Yeah, I'm from New England, not that far from NY, and I didn't know what the Palisades were. So I wonder how many in New Orleans or the south would know that.

We all realise that it was filmed there - doesn't necessarily mean that it's set there.

reply

That line always seemed weird to me, since I've lived in northern CA for most of my life, and the Palisades means something completely different here. Out here Tom is telling Verna to head to the mountains. Though that is right by wine country, so I guess it could be fun.

Take your flunky and dangle.

If you've been to Southern Louisiana you would definitely see the familiarity of the settings, but I think the Coen Bros were aiming for non-descript location that could pass for any Midwest or Eastern Seaboard metropolitan setting.

reply

I had zero idea where the film was supposed to be set. I thought it was just whatever mid-sized American city.

The Coens are better than most when it comes to making the most of their locations.
