Anybody know why they give a thanks to Gene Hackman for this movie?

After the role Fred Ward wanted went to Alec Baldwin.

Gene Hackman at one point was interested in playing Hoke while Fred Ward initially wanted to portray Freddy.

My understanding is that while Hackman was involved he played a part in promoting the project and helping it get the green light.
