In the novel by Charles Willeford, the author gives the reader a recipe for vinegar pie at the conclusion of the book.

Vinegar Pie, Sugar Pie, Pecan Pie.... all the same thing, aside from the pecans. Vinegar pie is just a coloquilsm(?)

Yes there is a real VINEGAR PIE. It was used a hundred years ago as a substitute for lemons....i guess for a lemon-meruinge pie? When lemons were out of season or too expensive people used vinegar instead...tastes almost the same...i made some recently...a bit more tart than lemon-meringue. Jerry Lewis' grandma used to make him vinegar pie!

And look at the size he ended up.

LOL!! Jerry Lewis definitely put on a few pounds.

Speaking of that....Alec Baldwin should lay off the donuts too. He's turned into quite a chubby since his Miami Blues days. I still like him though. His SNL shows are classic.

Actually, if you've seen Jerry Lewis over the last year or so, he's lost the weight. It was off before last year's MDA Telethon. And, the gain itself was related to the strong steroids he was prescribed to combat a serious lung disease, not anything to do with his diet.

And now for something completely different...

You done hear that crazed noise when 'Susie' cuts into that stiff, old nasty Vinegar pie deal?!

This may be the oldest IMDB thread in existence(first post from Oct 10 2002).

There probably is but if it's made as they explain in the movie, there's hardly any vinegar in it. I guess that's normal if you want to have an edible cake, but still.. sounds a bit stupid.

I've wanted to try vinegar pie ever since i saw this movie back in the early nineties. I always imagined it would be like shepherd's pie, but vinegar-y (i love shepherd's pie, and i love vinegar). But from the comments here, sounds like it's more of a dessert pie. Either way, Fred Ward manages to make everything he eats in this movie look delicious!

Great movie-- a too forgotten classic.

reply

Wow...you wrote this 13 years ago! The pie sounds gross to me, whether it exists or not!

reply

Hahaha. I love this movie and that pie....I'll never forget the sound of the knife going through it and Junior's face while trying it. It's the little things in movies that you remember forever that makes them great. Way too many movies are forgettable but Miami Blues has tons of little quirks that make it re-watchable over and over. Jennifer's accent is just awesome and I loved it again in Hateful 8.

reply

She was unbelievable in Hateful Eight! Her performance was one of the best I've seen in years.
