Audrey

Her character is the most interesting (and sad) one in the movie. I am stunned that Carolyn Farina hasn't done much else, aside from the 4 films listed on the IMDB.

Anyone have any biographical info on the actress ? Where is she now ? Does she still act ?

reply

I had the same reaction, but it seems not only was this the first movie for much of the cast, it was also the last, or very nearly so. Very odd, since I would have thought from watching the movie that several of them had promising careers ahead of them.

reply

I haven't seen The Age of Innocence in 13 years. Did anyone see her in it ? Was her part small ? I don't remember

Seems like the actors in Metropolitan had better careers afterwards than the female leads did, unfortunately. It would be interesting to know what they are all up to now.

reply

She played one of the sisters and was only seen at the dinner table. Her part was very very small, but it was indeed lovely to see her again.

reply

Did anyone see that film she did with Crispin Glover that the IMDB lists ?

reply

No, but I see Carolyn had no acting experience at all prior to her starring roll in Metropolitan! Unbelievable. Stillman's wife "discovered" her in Macy's at the perfume counter. What a find. Anyway, her lack of acting experience may explain her lack of a career after the Stillman films. Perhaps she had little interest pursuing the grueling life of auditions, stardom, blah, blah, blah ... or perhaps she didn't want to move to LA which might have eventually been required.

Perhaps she has done some stage work (you could Google her name and something might show up) .... or maybe she has retired from show biz entirely .... maybe even gotten married, become a mom, who knows.

I wonder, now, if she were actually sort of like her character... did she grow up in Manhattan? Why was she working at the Macy's perfume counter? People don't move to Manhattan unless they want to pursue acting, usually. Who knows.

In any case, her performance in Metropolitan was a lifetime achievement. I'm glad we got to experience it.

Why is that so unbelievable ? It wasn’t exactly a difficult role to play. All that Audrey does throughout the entire movie is whine in that same annoying voice which sounds like she has a sinus cold.

reply

After a Google search and so forth just now, I have come to the conclusion that Carolyn has completely dropped out of show biz and is assiduously avoiding it. There is no more information ANYWHERE than what we already know, and no bio on her ANYWHERE except that she was born in Bayside, Queens.

reply

I did a Yahoo search and came across one website that said that Carolyn was born in 1964. It also said that her part in "Little Noises" was small, and that she played a blonde.

Anyone find a website with photos of her from Metropolitan or any other film ?

I personally feel that it must have been her decision to withdraw from the biz. Otherwise, there would at least be some further info or at least one photo of her available, that had gotten onto the Web somehow. We don't even know her birthdate -- all we know is that she was born in Bayside and that Stillman's wife discovered her, working at Macy's. It's almost as if she is in the witness protection program.

Several of the supporting cast (who did much less luminous jobs than her in the movie) have had long, if sometimes sketchy, careers (I am of course not referring to Chris, but to the rest of the cast). So I think it would be not all that hard for her to have had agents begging to represent her, and not all that hard to work at least now and then.

I personally think, from all the facts listed above, that she has chosen this life of complete and utter anonymity, for whatever reason, and perhaps is now married with kids.

I wasn't that thrilled with the Townsend actor. Beyond his red hair, and the good fit of this role, I found him a bit forgettable. Whereas, on the other hand, Carolyn was, as critics have rightly noted, luminous.

I bought Little Noises on ebay the other day, for less than $10. I will watch it next week and will let you know how big her role is.

reply

Well, I finally sat down and watched LITTLE NOISES. For those of you who haven't heard of it, it is a low budget, 77 minute movie from 1991 that looks like it went straight to video, although there may have been a limited release.

It is a very depressing drama, set mostly in Hoboken, NJ, and stars Crispin Glover, Tatum O'Neal, John C.McGinley (of the NBC TV show "Scrubs") and others. The film concerns a penniless, 27 year old would-be novelist (Glover), who, out of desperation to not be a "loser", tells a literary agent that he has written a series of poems, that in reality were given to him by a mute neighbor. The book is published and Glover becomes very successful, but then he feels guilty when he discovers that the true author is now homeless.

As someone mentioned above, Caroline Farina is in the film for literally a minute, in two very brief scenes. She plays Glover's cousin, who barges into his apartment looking for rent money that he owes. Her first scene is within the first five minutes of the movie, and the second is about a half hour later.

She is TOTALLY unrecognizable as a blonde, and with a street-wise accent. Certainly not like the refined character that she was in METROPOLITAN. When I saw the movie at first, I thought that Farina was Tatum O'Neal's character, a struggling playwright. Not so!

The part is so small, no wonder she gave up acting !

Somebody please , make-Inquiries with the Witness Protection Program! Carolyn Farina is/was too-good-of-An-Actress to "Us" to lose-Her!

God, I agree, Pharoah. But we'll always have Metropolitan.

Perhaps it's best this way. This way, we have the perfect performance, a veritable jewel, untarnished by further acting jobs with badly cast poor fits, tiny parts, terrible scripts, or anything that might detract from our memory of this gem of a turn.

Brava, Carolyn!

How did the character of Audrey fit into The Last Days of Disco?

reply

I don't know; I haven't watched The Last Days of Disco. You'll need to find someone (on this board or on the LDOD board) who has seen that movie, and click "Reply" on their post. "MisterMycroft" seems a good bet here.

Please for God's sake fix the spelling in your subject line.

She made a cameo appearance in Last Days of Disco.

She is sitting on a couch in the Disco with Charlie Black. There is another guy and girl with them, presumably their dates.

The Kate Beckinsdale character points her out and says something like

"That's Audrey Rouget, she was the youngest ever editor at (some publishing house), she interviewed me for a job,..... do you ever get the feeling some people can see right through you,........ I didn't get the job"

And then later you see her in the foreground of another scene dancing.

There is also a shot of Sally Fowler and Fred sitting on a couch.

In the commentary on Metropolitan, Whit Stillman says that the actors were so convincing that some people assumed that they were just playing themselves as preppies. And how he once asked a casting director about Caroline Farina, and he was told they were just sending her for a certain type of role.

But selfishly I think it adds to the movies appeal that the cast remains relatively unknown. I had never seen any of the cast before, it made it very believable for me.

I have seen ensemble movies from the 80s and 90s which were the early roles of todays recognisable stars. It does not have the same effect on me as someone seeing it back then, when that group of stars were completely unknown. It feels more dated.

I'm watching Metropolitan right now. The moment I saw Audrey, I thought: where have I seen that girl before? and that's why I came to this board.

Now, ya'll tell me that she's only been in a handful of films. Probably I remember her from Age of Innocence which is a favorite with me. Was she Daniel Day LEwis' sister? Anyway, she made a big impresison on me, to remember her is a bit role.

Audrey, if you are out there: we think you are great! And good for you for getting out of the Hollywood scene.

If this was released today, Carolyn Farina would have become a more successful actress. Maybe Greta Gerwig levels, been a indie queen.

Audrey is definitely Stillman's sweetest and most likeable character, I think it's mostly down to Farina performance. She gives Audrey just strong will but gentle heart, I love that she had her eyes on Tom once she read the letter's he sent to his Ex. She's probably the most honest and true to herself then everyone in the group, she never changes herself and sticks by her principles. Farina's acting anytime Tom is so blissfully ignorant to Audrey's feelings for him when he talks about his Ex, are some of the best acted moments in the film. Along with Chris Eigeman as Nick, she's the standout of the cast.

Shame Stillman didn't cast her as Alice in The Last Day's of Disco, i liked Chloe Sevigny in the film but I think Farina would have gotten over Alice's innocence and made you feel for her a lot more then Sevigny did.
