Charlotte's psychological state.

Obviously Charlotte had some mental issues, and ofcourse, Cher's character didn't explore them and moved instead.

What mental illness could she have had? No mentally healthy person just goes out and steals their family car and drives to some random's house and tells crazy stories and lies. Why didn't the film explore this more? I thought it was quite sad.

Simply put, they didn't explore it because that's not what they had in mind for the movie. I don't think she was crazy; granted, she had issues, but I think she was just a young, confused girl who didn't know as much as she thought.

She was very young. She was living in the shadow of her mother who had some mixed up views of things as well. Charlotte was just trying to figure things out. I don't think she was mentally ill.

I don't think she was mentally ill, I think she was emotionally traumatized. She was abandoned by her father, her mother was a crazy whore who kept uprooting her, who was not interested in being a mother, and blamed her for her lost youth. She was searching for love, acceptance, guidance, etc. All the things she was not getting at home. She was crazy about religion for years and years because it gave her something to believe in that never changed. It gave her someone to hold on to that was always there no matter where she went. Don't get me wrong, she was damn nutty, especially in the book. But I think that was her problem.

Charlotte wasn't mentally ill at all, she was a teenager.

I don't think she was crazy, but I thought she was odd in many ways as well. Definitely not your typical teenage girl, but with a Mother like that, what do you expect? It's no wonder she had emotional problems.

I love this movie. I think the characters are all so interesting. But I just watched it again and for the first time, I found Charlotte's behavior very sad. Yes, much of it is 'teenage' behavior, but I'm sure it had been going on way before she was a teenager. Clearly there are many layers to this onion - her mother, never knowing her father, the constantly moving. Sad. I'm just always so happy Katie doesn't drown. :)
