Um...are Charlotte and Kate just half-sisters?

Didn't see this addressed anywhere on the forum...if Charlotte's father left when she was little, with whom did Rachel have Kate? Sorry if I missed something in the dialogue, but the movie makes it seem like they're full sisters. Yes, I'm aware siblings who share the same mother usually aren't referred to as halves, but I was still just wondering about this..

Yes they are half siblings. Mrs Flax and Lou have a conversation about this. Lou asks her at the breakfast table when she invites him over and actually asks "Who was Kate's father?" and Rachel says that she never caught his name, she was a maid in a hotel who "delivered more than his towels" So it was a wham bam thank you ma'mm kind of thing. Its quite a clear scene. Did you watch the whole movie? (Thats not meant rudely)

I do remember Mrs.Flax saying Kate's father was an Olympic swimmer (perhaps accounting for Kate's swimming prowess) now that you mention it. I don't know..the movie just makes it seem like they're full sisters.

I know what you're saying, I think its because there are no Dads around and its very much that its just the three of them as a family

I grew up in a similar situation. My sister is technically my half sister, but, the "half" didn't really mean anything. We grew up in the same house, raised by our Mkn, and neither her "dad" nor mine were in the picture -- she is my SISTER.

y'all weren't even the least bit curious as to who your fathers were?

reply

I also have a sister who is technically only a "half" sister but this term "half sister" simply never existed in our lives. It never has and never will; we are sisters and having different fathers was simply not a factor in our relationship or feelings. In fact, I have always found it odd how other people refer to having "half" siblings (I guess because I cannot relate to it). It never occurred to me to refer to her in such a way and same for her.

reply

Most people don't refer to their siblings as "half siblings" unless there's a generational gap or they aren't very well aquainted for whatever reason.

Go by your hearts, not the dictionary.

reply

i never thought about it or caught that but it makes sense just based on the age gap between charlotte and kate.
