GOLF CLAP!

I was watching an interview on NBAtv minutes ago and I heard Sheryl Miller say and perform, "Golf Clap." That is when it occurred to me at 4:15 in the AM that Men at Work is responsible for giving the world "Golf Clap." I'm 27, I saw this movie when it was released on video in December of 1990. I was in 2nd grade and I watched it with Aaron King at his house when I was spending the night. If you remember it from its conception you know how many times you've said and or heard, "golf Clap." throughout the 1990s.

It's great writing by Emilio (or possibly improvisation but)The whole movie is amazing. Obviously it's not winning any Oscars, but it is my favorite movie. I have the soundtrack and I watch it regularly. I live in Los Angeles and work in the film business. I was working at a art/prop house last year and I met the set decorator. I told her it was my favorite movie and after I established some rapport I asked her for some stories/facts from the production. She told me a pretty funny one which I will tell upon request.

The best thing about this movie is that it is an original movie......vague I know but let me elaborate

The movie ends with Carl, James, Susan, Lewis, and Pizza man laughing at Maxwell who was douched with his own oil. (I know it really ends with Mike and Jeff getting pissed on and the Pizza man's girlfriend calling into the morning show)

Anyway, They just sit there laughing and they live happily ever after. They fail to mention like a lot of late 80s early 90s how it all went after or at least had some story credibility. My point being.....

*Did Carl and Susan end up together? Not that important to me, and a little different from the formula. A lot of times there would be a, "So now that this is all over and I'm still a garbage man.......Kiss......They fall in love etc.

*What happen to the 50something toxic goons they were beating the *beep* out of? They didn't kill or knock all of them out cold. I would like to believe they were fed up with Maxwell Potterdam III and ran off to save their own skins knowing the cops would be there soon.

*James didn't really have/fulfill a character arch, but me and millions of people are still satisfied. e.i; His "flaw" is that he can't commit, but yet no female interest for him in the movie......Original and cool.

*There was know reconciliation with the Pizza Man. No...."I should press charges so bad...........but I had a blast.....We're gonna be great friends now and forever" etc.........original and cool!

and finally....

*No Surf Shop?
Nope....No Headline On the Las Playas Register reading: Two local garbage solve murder of Mayor Elect Berger. either.

In conclusion, having worked on plenty of productions some part of me would like to believe these are missing because of money, time, location, etc. and not because Emilio didn't want to add them, but if he meant to leave these scenes/storylines out.... he is one creative and original guy who has made me proud of my favorite movie.

PS. I would like to start or be part of a petition of some sort to get Charlie, Emilio, Kieth and whoever to do a special Edition Commentary. If we make enough noise and get a hold of the right people it is do-able. I will leave you with a music video. I will expect you all to Golf Clap at the end! Thank you MAW fans.

Oh man, I was watching this movie tonight and I know exactly what you mean by the whole "golf clap" thing. I was in first grade when the movie came out on video and have been a huge fan every since. I've uttered this term countless times throughout my life and didn't realize until tonight that it was because of this movie. Glad to see I'm not the only one!

I use it all the time, and if they don't GET IT....it's probably not worth explaining to them.

Same with: "give the governor a harrumph!" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JN99jshaQbY.

this is why i love movies. such little passing idiosyncrasies. they just hit some point somewhere in your brain, which brings a smile to your face.

and i love that there are other people who appreciate such little things, while some might not find anything funny about it [ like my girlfriend ] and not understand why we're laughing at it.

i accept that i saw this movie just recently, cos come on, in 1990 i was 8 years old, was totally into cartoons. i try to do a golf clap now and then, but NO ONE gets it. i seriously think, this movie should have a cult following.

i saw a thread on here somewhere on that.

beyond cult. a new movement! criterion collection needs to get on this & release a special edition of this classic.
