NO one has mentioned the Lottery scene?!

Come on damn it!

I was so upset with that scene. Why didn't the little boy go to the police? That kid stole millions of dollars, and was no friend. Why would he do that? And why didn't the parents try to help? Didn't they care about his mother dying and what not? Biggest flaw in the script, they should have concentrated on that story arc more.

I think they did finish that storyline. Even though it was totally unfair, the friend and the friend's older sister teamed up against Matty. Matty had absolutely no proof that they agreed to share the winnings. Also, it is never clearly stated in the movie whether they agreed to split just the tickets or split the possible winnings. All Matty says when they buy the tickets is "Remember, we share everything."

I think the whole tone of the movie is sadness, and how life can be very difficult to get through, and how life is completely unfair. But in the end they accept that although they will never have their happy lives with their father/ husband in the suburbs ever again, the 3 of them must adjust, and try to find happiness together in the city.

How about the fact that the sister bought the tickets because the two boys were minors. If they were not eligible to buy tickets, then neither boy was eligible to win the prize either.

I felt that Matty understood at that point that the man who he thought would be his new father figure was NOT. He didn't care about him at all. Matty had to face the harsh reality that his father was gone, and now he only had his mother and his brother.

Good point. Why wouldn't the sister be the winner, since she bought the tickets? In the film, she had this "so what" attitude, but at her age you'd think she'd be partying. Makes no sense.
