The Belle crew say that about the B-17 that gets its nose shot out and subsequently limps out of formation (C-Cup). Was that plane returning to base or do you think it was shot down?

shareHistorically, the hope is that the straggler can make it back-depending how far they are from the the channel and/or friendly fighter cover, they sometimes make it but often they are picked off.

Maybe C-Cup made it back, but it seemed that the crew of the Belle had been on enough missions by then to recognize that a plane in that situation was not coming back, hence the boogeyman line. But, at least those guys on that plane had time to bail out unlike those poor bastards on Mother & Country and Windy City.
