What a Shame....

The book was SO much better. It was very funny. Something go lost in the translation or they ran out of money because, while the premise is the same, it never captured any of the book's humour at all. Maybe the producers got involved and put their ugly screwed up fingerprints on it. They're ALWAYS sticking their noses in and ruining movies. If they got someone to write a script that captured the humor of the book it could have been such a great movie. Sadly, it turned into this nasty POS.

I just read the book because I'm trying to discover as much of Fredric Brown's work as possible, and I thought it was pretty decent. I haven't seen the film, but the trailer didn't look very promising. Brown's usual humor was present in the novel, but while I was reading it I kept envisioning a darker adaptation of the book.

It is your choice to watch the movie or not. I personally would NOT if I were you. The budget must have been $5000, including salaries! The martians are just actors with green makeup and clothes dyed green. It is horrible.
As for envisioning a darker adaptation, well that's an interesting way to go, but not what the book is about either. The book is a comedy sci-fi and I love how Brown took the subject a different way. It is an original, unique book and deserved to be done right.
Like I said I cannot recommend the movie in ANY way. It may turn you off the book too, or perhaps make you appreciate the book and Mr. Brown all that more!
I think if someone would remake the movie with a decent budget, CGI and actors (Randy Quaid was HORRIBLY miscast) and make a movie like they actually gave a crap then we'd probably be looking at a pretty good hit. Because it is a different way to do a typical "alien invasion" story.
I'm biased because I like my sci-fi with a nice big spoonful of humour!

If you do see the movie, come back and let me know what you thought!

Cheers,
Andrew

I was actually thinking of a dark comedy adaptation, one that kept most elements from the book. I think that capturing the comedic aspect of the book would be crucial to successfully adapting the book.

I don't plan on watching the film. The trailer was enough for me. It looks pretty campy.
