Terrible UK DVD from Second Sight

As I already have the nice 2000 Tartan DVD release of this film, I didn't hurry to play the 2005 Second Sight DVD a while back, when I bought it.
Last night, I put the Second Sight DVD on, and it is terrible! Firstly, although the film was shot in 2.35:1 widescreen ratio, Second Sight scanned the picture up to about 1.85:1, like what the BBC often do when they show a 2.35:1 film! So, you can't see all of the picture. Secondly, directly comparing this DVD to the good 2000 Tartan print, the colour is weak and grainy, whereas the Tartan DVD is simply beautiful.

If you want to see 'The Hairdresser's Husband' as it was made, buy either the Tartan UK DVD from 2000 (where you can find it) or the French DVDY print, also deleted but nevertheless available from amazon.fr (French title: Le Mari De La Coiffeuse). Or, if you understand French and don't need English sub-titles, it's available in Spain, 2.35:1.

I wish I had seen this thread before buying this DVD. Oh well, at least it wasn't very expensive. I guess I will buy the French edition next time I am in France.

The various notes on this thread alarmed me, since I had recently bought Leconte's 'Monsieur Hire' on a Second Sight disc, and thought this might have suffered the same treatment. Needn't have worried though - it's still in 'scope and very nice quality.

Judging by the Monsieur Hire disc, Second Sight appeared to be a brand of Pathe, but their website suggests they are an independent UK company.

It looks like neither the Tartan or 'DVDY' editions are available any more, so I have caved in and ordered the Second Sight version.

Since I saw it first on TV and then on 16mm with a print that I'm pretty sure was also letterbox (1.85:1 or similar), I must be destined (short of chancing on a second-hand copy) only to see it in this form. Still one of my favourite films, though.
