The Sterling pilgrimage

A friend introduced me to _Luther the Geek_ one evening; a group of us got together one evening for KFC and a movie. :) We were surprised to find out where it was filmed (we both lived in Iowa at the time--my friend has since moved), and it turned out we could stop at Sterling, Illinois along the way to an annual computer conference we attended (and still do), so for several years we made a Luther the Geek pilgrimage of sorts.

The first time around, we stopped at the Casey's on the way into town and asked the woman behind the counter about the movie. She didn't know, and called back to her coworker, who replied, "Oh, you know, that damn movie..." Suddenly, our not having seen a "Home of Luther the Geek" sign accompanying "Welcome to Sterling" seemed less surprising.

We did stop at the Kroger's where a couple of scenes were shot, and looked at the aisle with the eggs. Once we stopped at a video store and talked with the woman behind the counter about it; she knew someone who had been involved with the making of the film.

After my friend moved, the pilgrimages stopped, alas. The Kroger's is now a Goodwill.

Any chance you know the location of the farmhouse? That would be a real trip to see. I'd guess it is a private dwelling, but it would be cool to see the site.

I salute you and your friends for making a Sterling pilgrimage, that is just beyond fantastic.
