'Mr Sulu...warp speed'

I know I shouldn't laugh but Aykroyd's little "episodes" are so hilarious. I thought I said somewhere else about this movie that if they did it in a different, darker tone, they MIGHT have been able to pull it off. It would be difficult though.

I thought the movie could have been better but i liked it. Ackroyd was funny to watch with his episodes and was perfect for the part. I love gene hackman and it was fun to watch him in a comedy role with him doing serious stuff all the time, again they could have worked on the script a bit.

No, I'm pretty sure you're supposed to. ;) I'm really surprised at the IMDB reviews who said they were offended by this movie. Offended for the mentally ill? I personally thought the scene where Hackman is encouraging Aykroyd to rage against his illness was an inspirational moment. No, it's not A Beautiful Mind, but it's not meant to be. Drama isn't the only way to discuss difficult issues.

The movie's tone is kinda all over the place, going from slapstick silly to really serious for a second and then back again. Needed a better balance. But that scene in the middle of the night where Gene Hackman's character has to block the door because Ayrkoyd's going crazy just outside does start to get rather unsettling after a couple of seconds. Maybe cause all we're hearing is disembodied voice going increasingly nuts and intense. That's the cool thing about comedy, it can turn on a dime from silly to disturbing.
