Is this the movie where..

I think i've seen this movie, but not positive. The poster's summary of the movie helped some, but if i have in fact seen this movie, my main memory that stands out is a scene early on where a little girl and her mother are struggling in a river or some small body of water. The older woman (Ladd) sees them and starts to try to help them out of the water. She looks stunned to see the little girl and instead of pulling the mother up, if i remember, she actually beats her and ends up killing her, then she pulls the little girl out of the water. I was stunned that she killed the mother. I seem to remember the little girl throws herself into the older woman's arms. I was really puzzled by that, that she wasn't upset that the woman killed the girl's mother. Ladd looks really surprised when the girl hugs her then looks relieved and basically takes the girl and raises her as her own.

Is this that movie? Thanks

Yes, that is the same movie. I just watched it this morning on Lifetime Movie Network.

I was drawn into watching it because I am a fan of the writer, Kate Wilhelm, who has written many books that I have enjoyed.

Yes, thanks Anonymom. I just watched the movie again, myself just a few days ago. Very good movie. Very interesting. I'm still puzzled about why the little girl ran and hugged Diane Ladd's character and called her 'Mommy' after she pulled her from the water. I'm assuming the little girl also saw Ladd kill her mother, though she must have blocked it out, only to remember it years later when her memory is prodded by Ladd. I can't believe someone would do something like that.. to rescue a drowing child, then to actually kill the parent and take the child and raise her as if she was her own. Ugh.

I will say, too, that the movie left a few questions unanswered.. like what happened to the little girl's twin? Someone obviously must have come to get her when the mother didn't come back to get her? Anyway, i'm very glad the twins found eachother. At least one good thing did come of the tragedy that had happened years ago.

I happened to catch the ending of this on tv... when I was six. I too was confused that the little girl was clinging to Diane Ladd's character. Perhaps we can blame it on being disoriented from getting knocked back and forth in the rapids. Seriously though, that flashback reveal really messed me up and I ended up blocking it out until some years ago. It wasn't until today that I finally figured out this was the film the scene was from.
