Do I have the right movie?

This is tough--I have limited information about a great AIDS movie I saw years ago, and am wondering if it's Longterm Companion--can someone confirm I have the right movie?

The movie I'm thinking of tells about how AIDS started in the US. It wasn't "And The Band Played On", but it was very similar. The few random facts I can remember is that it also discussed the San Francisco(?) bathhouses, and might have included a scene with a male airline employee who was spreading AIDS rapidly. They referred to AIDS as "GRID" in this movie, until I think the very end, where they made an annoucement and renamed it to AIDS.

This story spent a lot of time with the doctors trying to track it down and figure out what it was.

I don't have any more info. Hope someone can help--I'll be eternally grateful! Does this sound like Longterm Companion?

Thanks,
Brian

Are you sure it wasn't "And The Band Played On?" You've just described the entire plot of that movie. Whatever movie it is, it isn't "Longtime Companion."

reply

Thanks.

Yeah, it's not ATBPO. I bought ATBPO a while back, thinking it was the same movie, but it wasn't. It's a very similar plot.

I appreciate you guys trying to help me out.

this movie was more on the personal side of the disease. Maybe what you saw was a documentary?

reply

No, it was definitely a movie.

But thanks for you guys trying to help me figure it out.

Are you perhaps thinking of "Parting Glances" - check out IMDB listing at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091725/combined

reply

Maybe you mean Buddies?

gives you information on this film.

I don't think that's it. The movie I'm thinking of doesn't really zoom in on any one person's ordeal with AIDS. It's just a story of how the doctor's came investigated it and learned about it, and then at the end it gets a name. It plays out a heck of a lot like "And the Band Played On", but that's not it, either.

Thanks to you and the other guys as well for trying to help me locate this movie! You are great. I am still looking but maybe with all the help I'm getting I'll find it. :)

There can't be that many movies focusing on a airline steward spreading AIDS -- sounds SO MUCH like ATBPO.

reply

Yeah, I admit it was really similar. Lots of little differences, though. Maybe what I saw was really low budget rip-off. lol

reply

Brian-the scenes you describe are all from "And the band played on" why are you so sure it wasn't?

reply

Because I've seen ATBPO (twice). :)

It's a very similar movie.

reply

Could the movie you're trying to pinpoint be "An Early Frost" (1985)?

It starred Aidan Quinn, Gena Rowland & Ben Gazzara. Mention of the gay bathhouses is made in this movie.

reply

belle, that was a good movie! I'm old, i was 13 when i watched it originally, but what a good one...

reply

I, too, have a very hard time believing it wasn't ATBPO. Anyway, it's not Longtime Companion, which is set in NYC and Fire Island, but if you've never seen LC, then get ye to a rental house and watch it.

reply

Thanks for the response. I've seen ATBPO twice, and the movies are extremely similar. Maybe that's why I can't locate it--it sounds too much like ATBPO.

reply

You can't remember anyone who starred in it? That would probably help.

Nah, sorry... it has been SO long ago now. Heck, it's been a long time since I posted this original message. lol

But thanks for trying. I think this is one movie that will never be found.

As a film critic and historian, I can tell you, with zero doubt, that the film you described is "And the Band Played On". There is no other film dealing with this subject matter that is the way you described, other than "And the Band Played On".

reply

I've seen ATBPO. It's really not that movie. :) But I appreciate you trying to help me out.

Just a shot in the dark but could it be Zero Patience. It was a strange film but I think it included the airline pilot who was supposed to have introduced AIDS into America. Am I way off with this suggestion guys?

reply

I think the correct title is Patient Zero- I think it's a Canadian movie.

It's Zero Patience (1993)

Billyraybrewton, perhaps you need a bit more humility. As one other has posted here, the movie this person is refering to is "Zero Patience". I suspect, however, that you might be trolling a bit since you had the word "zero" in your own post.
