Great movie but the one thing I don't get is Willy and Fuzzy being abstinent after the AIDS epidemic starts exploding. I mean...clearly they are the love of each others' life, I would think that in that scenario people would be 'Damn it, let's keep having sex, and to hell with this virus.'

It wasn't until several years into the epidemic that the medical community determined that the testable incubation period of the HIV virus is about 6 months. For all anyone knew at the time, the incubation period could have been 6 years.
That said, very early on it was determined that the HIV could not be transmitted by saliva, so I don't understand why they couldn't at least kiss. Without getting too descriptive, there are also various ways to engage in sex without fluid exchange--so I agree with you that depicting all intimate contact as completely 'off limits' was a bit extreme.
I think the word you are looking for is not abstinence, but monogamy. They entered a monogamous relationship with each other during the dawn of the crisis, and as a result they never got infected. That's what I took from it.
The bad news is you have houseguests. There is no good news.
