Willy and Fuzzy - abstaining from sex?

Great movie but the one thing I don't get is Willy and Fuzzy being abstinent after the AIDS epidemic starts exploding. I mean...clearly they are the love of each others' life, I would think that in that scenario people would be 'Damn it, let's keep having sex, and to hell with this virus.'

They were practicing abstinence out of concern & love for each other. It wasn't until several years into the epidemic that the medical community determined that the testable incubation period of the HIV virus is about 6 months. For all anyone knew at the time, the incubation period could have been 6 years.

That said, very early on it was determined that the HIV could not be transmitted by saliva, so I don't understand why they couldn't at least kiss. Without getting too descriptive, there are also various ways to engage in sex without fluid exchange--so I agree with you that depicting all intimate contact as completely 'off limits' was a bit extreme.

I think the word you are looking for is not abstinence, but monogamy. They entered a monogamous relationship with each other during the dawn of the crisis, and as a result they never got infected. That's what I took from it.

 The bad news is you have houseguests. There is no good news. 
