Oh my goodness 27-year-old Campbell Scott was drop dead gorgeous!!!

I thought the film was really good and Oscar worthy at the time, but can we take a moment to appreciate just how gorgeous Campbell Scott was in this film? 

He was 27-28 when he filmed this, before 'Dying Young', and, having seen Campbell's entire filmography to date, I can tell he's never been as good-looking as in Longtime Companion (1989). He looks pretty much like a Greek god, with soft facial features and perfect physique.  Screenshot: https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-0TrL7tmYUds/Vsb7ZkIysAI/AAAAAAAFzSs/btC8XNfIKT0/s1600/001%2BCampbell%2BScott%2Bas%2BWilly%2B%2BM00031.jpg

Why on earth didn't Campbell Scott become as big as Brad Pitt or Kevin Costner?! He had huge potential to become a more famous actor (like his father), especially in the 90s, when he starred as lead in many good films, alongside Anthony Hopkins, Matt Dillon, Ben Kingsley, Cameron Crowe etc. and other names who are still well-known in the film industry nowadays. It's such a shame that good actors are wasted to miscasts or low budget productions that don't make it to theaters or over the Ocean. What do you think?

Campbell has, by his own admission, always been more of an "indie" guy than a Hollywood guy.

Plus, he just doesn't have that superstar or driven quality that his father had or that the people you mention have. He is just more low-key and thoughtful, intellectual, retiring.

I always like seeing him and will watch almost anything with him in it -- but I can recognize that he's not a superstar nor does he want to be. He'd also often rather be behind the camera than in front of it.

I did not know that. Thank you very much for your reply and for the information provided.

Yeah, I guess Campbell Scott just isn't superstar / box-office material, but that doesn't mean he is less great. I'm a passionate indie fan, both film and music, and I enjoyed all independent, low-budget, indie movies that Campbell starred in - Roger Dodger and Crashing are my favourites! I love intellectual, esoteric, clever dialogues in movies, as opposed to intellectually - numbing, mass - fabricated cliches that you see in most theatre releases nowadays.

The only thing I hate is that Campbell's films are hard to find exactly because of this reason. I live in central Europe where he is almost non-existent unfortunately, and I had to dig up some very obscure corners of the internet to find some of his films, and some others I had to purchase from various online marketplaces, and I still couldn't find a couple of his older films.

As you, I will watch anything with him in it, until the day he stops making or starring in films.
What's your favourite film directed by Campbell?

Thanks again! :)

Well, he hasn't directed very many. Big Night is excellent -- an incredible accomplishment. Hamlet is good, and Campbell Scott is my favorite Hamlet out of all the many Hamlet actors I've seen. Unfortunately Lisa Gay Hamilton isn't a very good Ophelia (she's too fiery and strong-willed, not supple and biddable like Ophelia should be) so that sort of distracts from the film.

Ah great choice! I found Big Night very enjoyable and hilarious - what (co-)director ever thinks: 'I'm gonna direct this film and star in it, but I'm gonna be licking a lollipop and have a cast on my hand, just for fun, as it add nothing to the plot' ? 
