My parents lived in Montgomery when this took place. I've heard their stories.

From what my parents said the blacks lived on one side of town away from everyone while the whites lived on another. My mom has described it as over the train tracks. I don't know the actually distance but I picture my towns across town as a 10-15 minute car ride. So take that walking you get an idea on how far it was.

My mom grew up in Jackson, MS too and later moved to Montgomery, AL in her teens so she also experienced what you see in The Help. She had what she calls "a black maid." She was like her nanny. This woman did walk everywhere she
said.

It's hard to imagine living in a town divided by race like it was. My parents remember water fountains for each race and restaurants. It sounds crazy to me but that is how it was then. I can't stand any kind of racism but it still happens even today.
