The Krays....

My Granny actually went out with one of the Krays Drivers and she used to go totheir clubs and things and she even used to hang out with them and she said that even tho they were gangsters they were the most decent, kind and generous people in the world and would never harm anyone unless they harmed them And that they loved there mother more than anything in the widest world and would have done anything for her.She said that they should never have stayed in prison as long as they did and my great grandma even knew Violet Kray and said she loved her boys more than anything in the world.

I never knew them but the way my Gran goes on about them I wish I did x

you must be really sad to look up to scum bags like the Krays, just remember they were inforcers and got money out of a lot of "inocent" businesses/shopkeepers etc by force and fear ( i bet your nan never told you that), also Peter sutcliff's(sp) workmates, neighbours found him charming so perhaps he's a decent guy too........

Im probably very late on this discussion but i have to put my 10 cence in. This is for all the people slagging off the krays.
When the krays ran the streets of the east end, everybody felt about 100 times safer then they ever would now in this day and age. The krays looked after everybody and gave them a sense of security. They were real gangsters which is not something im bigging up but thats more then idiots from london today mugging and happy slapping can say. As my dad said, who knew charlie kray, they only killed people who were as bad as themselves, they didnt go around mugging old ladies and raping people, it was 60s gangsta land, and they no way deserved to get put in jail for as long as they did when peodophiles and people that murder kids and innocent people get about 5 years now.
Im not saying the krays were great people of course they were criminals, im just saying look at the bigger picture.

No they didn't but they did go around raping the local neighbourhood out of their hard earned cash thru protection rackets, not very nice at all, pretty much the same as mugging from what I can see, in fact worse as every week / month they'll pop by for another mugging session an dif you don't pay . . . phew! I dont think you know your ass from your elbow.

Despite the high cost of living, it remains popular.

I dont know anyone who knew the krays, but my dad once told me he was in London with some friends and they went in the Blind beggar pub !!.I think it was before the Krays murdered Cornell and Jack the hat,but still, looking back,my dad and his friends took a risk going in there, even though they probably didnt know that the Krays went there at the time !.As ,in the film,we see that they go in the pub even before they murdered Cornell there.

stinkface (really cool clever name by the way)

I dont know my arse from my elbow? Another clever expression. Stop calling me mate as im a woman first of all, now go back and read my answer properly........

I never bigged the krays up, i admit they were criminals who deserved to go to prison, my point was that the krays are seen as absolute monsters and evil people (true ronnie could be) but these men are in no way comparable to the rapists and paedophiles that get only 5 years in the nick, when the krays were there for their whole lives. Its a well known fact that East enders felt safer with the krays on the streets (no doubt criminals often felt safer when they finally got locked up) but the point is the krays only dealt with gangsters and criminals such as themselves.

Sorry if you still dont understand the "waffle" "mate"

"Easy? Honey, they dont call it a job for nothing."

All the people who venerate the brothers Kray and their ilk need to get a clue. Rose tinted goggles, and all that. You don't think that these scumbags would ever harm or intimidate someone who isn't affiliated with their criminal lifestyle? I don't doubt that the East End of their childhood was a far wilder place than the East End they terrorized, but today, I walk around the East End at night with no fear of being attacked, something I probably wouldn't have done if I'd been alive in the 60s. It amuses me that many of the older folks who advocate the return of national service to discipline the lawless youth also admire these two former lawless youths who were guilty of insuboridation and striking a superior officer. If a kid today did that, the older generation would be sure to shake their heads and say "never in my day".

Now, someone like Howard Marks, he was a harmless geezer, the type of Robin Hood figure that people imagine the Krays to have been. Fair enough, he was a bit naughty, but he and most of his colleague were just out to make some quick cash.

I think, as has been said before, that you do need to look at the bigger picture.

If you consider that Ronnie Biggs got 30 years for robbery, and that the Kray's got the same for murder (baring in mind that I'm talking of the crimes they were convicted for, rather than anything else they might have done) it's very clear that there people were made examples of. A friend of mine was raped outside her own home, and 18 months (seriously!) later she came face to face with her attacker in the street. People who neglect their children to the point of them dying through starvation and physical abuse get about 15 years these days.

The Krays did kill within the underworld, I've never heard of them killing innocent citizens - bare in mind that intimidation and extortion are entirely different kinds of crimes, ones that would not carry a 30 year prison sentence.

And having lived in the East End myself, I do agree that it's not the terrifying place some people try to make out it is, but at the same time I would never wonder around the streets on my own at night.
