The film should have ended with the shot of Frank walking up the stairs in the subway station. I find the subsequent sequence to be really unnecessary.

Abel says it in his audio commentary during that scene, I'm not sure it's ever been put to print.

That could have worked, Walken ascending from the underground into the New York night is definitely a striking image and would have been a very dark and ambiguous ending to the film.
