Did the principal know about Zach being abused?

Upon questioning by Kimball, Zach's mom asks him not to get the school involved, which implies that they don't know of the abuse already. But when Kimball confronts the father outside the school, the principal has the slightest hint of a grin on her face (I see it, anyway). Then in her office, she of course asks Kimball "What did it feel like to hit that son of a bitch?", which confirms that she was satisfied with seeing this happen.

Did the principal just get a sadistic kick out of witnessing an assault in front of her eyes, or did she at least have suspicions of the abuse?

It is implied by the headmisteress, that Zach was being abused. I think that Zach's father has a reputation at the school and the mother has tojld the head about the abuse.

on a lighter note, i did like seeing her do a few karate moves when Kimble leaves the room.

The school had a moral and legal responsibility to report it. If you have a reasonable suspicion (50% or higher) you HAVE to report it up the chain of command.

She may have heard rumors, and maybe was suspicious, but didn't have any actual evidence. Maybe nobody had seen the bruises to that point (the ones Kimball saw were on his mid back, covered by his shirt) and the mother had never said anything to anyone prior to telling Kimball. When she saw Kimball beating him up, she probably assumed he wouldn't do so unless he had proof, and just did what everyone wished they could do.

That's the way I thought as well but I was under the impression she was initially pissed that he beat that monster up in front of the kids.

I think she would've rather the kids not seen it, but deep down she was just glad the SOB got what was coming to him

It is funny cause in real life he'd be going to jail for assaulting that guy.

Take another look. Kimball didn't hit the guy until the guy took a swing at him.
