Peggy's car missing from garage? trivia or editing error?

Stan calls Candy and tells her the neighbor (Jim Ramsey) says Peggy's car isn't in the garage. He calls Jim back and asks him to check again to see if the car is back. Jim says "hold on", lays phone down, and goes to chech. At the garage, we see two other neighbors, one of whom says Stan just called and asked them to check on Peggy.

This doesn't make sense to me and suggests an editing error.
1. Why would Jim say the car was gone?
2. When Jim checks the second time, there is the car in the garage - garage door is open and lights on.
3. Why would Stan call a different neighbor and then call Jim immediately after?
4. What's wrong with Jim?!!

The movie follows the book of the actual incident quite well. In the book, there are two cars in the garage. One of them, a smaller VW Rabbit, was pulled in so far that the neighbor couldn't see it at first and told Stan (really Allan) that the car wasn't there. When he actually walks around to the foot of the driveway, he is surprised to see that both cars were actually present the whole time.
