a few observations

I was pretty young when this happened, so I missed some details. Was Betty Gore's husband ever a suspect? Him being on a business trip, seems a little convenient. I know he didn't actually participate, but were these 2 love birds, ever looked at, as co-conspirators? His constant phone calls, seem suspicious. He even called Candy, I think. Reading some of Betty's dad's memories from that time, really makes me wonder about Alan Gore. If a crime like this were to happen today, being on a business trip, wouldn't be enough to get the husband off the hook. Also, I was wondering something else. Betty Gore thought she was pregnant. Was it ever suspected that maybe this was what actually sent Candy into a rage? If the affair was still going on, or if she had hopes of getting back together, then hearing this news, would have pissed her off. And Candy saying she didn't want him, and the affair was over, doesn't mean squat. She was, and probably still is a liar.

One thing that really makes me think the Betty as the attacker story is false has to do with the baby. As moody as they say Betty was, she cared for her children, and I don't see her hacking a body up and leaving it in her laundry room as she went about her day taking care of Bethany. Also, she didn't lure Candy there...in fact, it appears she wasn't even expecting her. I read the book and it becomes clear Candy was more upset Allan ended it than she let on to be. She probably snapped about Betty maybe being pregnant but also planning this wonderful second honeymoon with the man she wanted.
