Near the end *Major Spoiler!*

Were Ju Dou and Tianqing trying to commit suicide near the end? It sounds to me that they were. Tianqing asks Ju Dou to marry him again(or something like that) and they end up in an air tight celler or storage facility. Ju Dou even says to Tianqing they should leave or we might not be able to later. The kid had to haul them out because they were close to death.

I also wonder what happened to the son at the end? His mother burns half of the shop down(along with herself) and he's nowhere to be found. Weird.

Hard movie to really love. Most of the characters were real a-holes. I did find the story very interesting and the camera work was outstanding. I just wish they would put it out in a remastered form. The bad print really takes away from the movie.

Yes, they were trying to commit suicide; they knew that they couldn't realistically live together in this world, so they decided to suffocate themselves together. The son hauled them out because he was spiteful. He didn't want his incestuous parents to get off the hook so easily.

I'm not sure where the son was while the mill was burning down, though. I think you're supposed to assume that he is elsewhere and will go on with his life.

Also, I totally agree about the movie being hard to like. I found it extremely sadistic and hard to watch.

Depressing film

The story had its hopeful moments, but then things started to unravel and their situations got more and more precarious. In a way it was a parable for the harsh realities of life in China under the Chi-Com regime. The common citizens had a brief period of hope, but the brutal Chi-Com leaders and their hatchet men (this would be the old man and the young unfeeling nephew) eventually exerted their crushing influence on people like Tian-qing and Ju Dou. This movie was banned in China, BTW. The authorities were afraid the public would connect the dots, so to speak.

I think you're the one whose imagining things. Films like these weren't banned in China because they had a so-called criticism of the Chinese Government (seriously, who on earth would conclude that?), but rather that such films portrayed the Chinese as amoral savages where husbands beat their wives and women sleep around. I mean, even Hollywood used to ban films that portrayed America in an negative light to the outside world, such as "Grapes of Wrath".

No, you got it completely wrong, they were not trying to commit suicide, they were "doing" it in the basement. It was already explained in the movie, after the death of the old man, Tianqing was forced to move out the big house while Judou and their son stayed because of the village custom and the gossip, the folks already suspected these two were lovers and Tianbai was Tianqing's son. Now the old man was dead, there was no way a widow and another single man (Tianqing was not her step-son, and he was older than her, they had no blood relationship) can live together under the same roof.

Judou said in the movie, since Tianqing lived away for 8 years and these two barely had any time together, they went to the abandoned basement to have sex, but there wasn't enough air in the basement, they fell into some coma. The son found them, he saved his mother but decided to kill his father. He knew Tianqing was his real father but he just can't accept that, he grew up with the rage and hate against Tianqing because of all the gossips and the humiliations.

When Judou woke up and found out what happened - her son killed his real father, she lost the hope and burnt the house down.
