True enough, Tim Curry's performance alone pulled this from a woefully cheap looking, forgettable, low-budget 3rd rate horror offering into an infamous and creepy movie/miniseries. Its a prime example of a single actor making a movie what it is.
The mummified Pennywise was easily one of the LEAST scary moments in the film.

I think the opening and Georgie talking to Pennywise in the sewer was a lot scarier than the mummy moment, although that was kind of creepy. I mostly agree with you op, but I do think the series managed to work in a few unsettling moments, it's just a shame that it wasn't consistent enough.
Ben talking to his dead father was somewhat chilling, though I imagine fans of the novel were disappointed that it wasn't like his encounter in that.
Yeah this film was a bad adaptation but the parts where Georgie's album spills out blood as well as the scene where blood erupts from the sink in Bev's bathroom were pretty damn scary and gory, even by early 90s standards! Not to mention, those scenes took place in the early 60s when everyone had a more sensitive stomach. If something like that really happened back in 1960 and some kid saw blood coming out of the sink in their bathroom like that, they'd be traumatized for life! There were no slasher films other than Psycho back then, so anyone seeing that amount of blood would probably either have a heart attack of be really freaked out and permanently traumatized to the point where they would never go near another sink again.

shareI may be biased because I grew up renting this film constantly on VHS from the video store, but I don't really understand the hate.
Tim Curry alone makes this a memorable film, but the rest of cast (especially the kids) do an admirable job as well. I also really liked the original score and use of Fur Elise. The music and sound effects were excellent.
It's a charming little (long) horror film with some genuinely creepy scenes and locations.
