can someone explain what 'It' is?

I just watched "IT" last night for the first time. And I was disappointed in the ending. I was hoping "it" was just an evil clown that was a manifestation of all their fears. But it seems like "It" was a clown, werewolf, light thing, giant spider, alien-esq thing.

Can someone explain if my assumption is correct or not?

It is an evil entity from beyond space.
Read the Novel IT by Stephen King. I guarantee it will definetly be worth your time. Novel is 100 times better than this Mini-Series
