Joan Plowright

is so hysterically funny in this. Her accent sounds so authentic to me. I freaked out when I found out she's a Brit. The scene when she's looking for a Johnny Mathis album makes me die of laughter every time.

She practically steals every scene that she is in. And what about Joey's mother? The scene in the hospital room? One of the funniest scenes in film history.

Amazing how she really looks like an older Tracey Ullman! I checked here if she really was his mother, in real life haha

reply

Joan was awesome! Her acting was absolutely brilliant!

She OWNED this movie. We expect Kevin Kline and Tracey Ullman to be funny, but broad comedy from Lady Olivier?!? Joan Plowright was the third wife of Laurence Olivier, and with her stage training you expect to see her on Masterpiece Theatre, not tossing off lines about hiring hitmen, killing as America's national pastime, etc. She cajoled one lowlife into attacking her son-in-law with homemade cookies and impressed her grandchildren because 'Grandma can fix anything!". Best of all, the audience can't see Plowright "acting'-she didn't ham it up one bit.
I just watched this movie again and howled with laughter.

reply

Plowright has added a little something special to every film of hers that I have watched.

She is a fabulous actress that can adapt to any situation/scene. In "Bringing Down the House" she has hysterical as the weed-smoking kidnapped billionaire.

reply

Exactly, she was hysterical in Bringing Down the House, same for I Love You to Death. She was great, she can play pretty much any role and steal it!
