was this ever explained as to why the alien would drain people then stab them in the head with a spike?

He injected his victims with heroin, and then inserted the probe into their skulls to extract the chemicals released by the brain (some kind of endorphins?). Those chemicals were the actual drug that he had come to Earth to collect. I'm pretty sure this is explained at some point in the movie (it's been over 20 years since I last saw it).
