Loser Father

IS it just me, or does Haakons father seem like a deadbeat to shoulder off his debt to his young son?

reply

Ummmm..... Hello...... His father hurt his leg. He couldn't go back to work until he was healed up, but unfortunately, his farm was going to be taken away, so Hakon was the one who had to go.

reply

No I agree his father was a deadbeat. So what he hurt his leg. It was HIS debt not his sons.

reply

So you'd much rather have the family starve to death? Children helping to pay off family debt wasn't unheard of back in those days.

reply

It shouldn't be now, either.

What did you want him to do? Say "No Hakon, you can't go. You might get hurt. Instead we will all lose our farm and starve. Or freeze to death. Whichever is first."

reply

It might be his fathers debt, but it was the family who was going to suffer if Haakon didn't go. There was no choice really.

reply

His father certainly didn't LIKE the idea of Haakon going to sea...But it was about the only alternative to losing the farm.
