Hakons Hat

What kind of hat is it that Hakon is given in the pub?
It looks like a greek fisherman hat, but at the same time it doesn't.

Perhaps it is a Norwegian sailor's cap.

It looks like the same cap his father is wearing when he comes home at the start of the movie.

I bought a Greek fisherman's cap when I visited San Francisco a few years back (made in Greece, to boot), and many sailors wear them in the Great Lakes shipping industry, so it may well be a Greek Sailor's cap. I suspect that it may be intended to be symbolic more than factual: changing from the child's knit cap to the adult sailor's cap as he goes from probationer (traveling from Norway to England via the shore hugging route) to ship's boy (traveling the deep seas themselves) ~ growing up from childhood to manhood, from victim to conqueror.

Now, if we can just get this story to grow from VHS to DVD, the tale of the cap will be complete!

Thanks...and maybe get it in widescreen.
Because I am confused by something else.
The original bosun disappears and is replaced by another bosun.
I suppose this must be a cut scene and thought maybe he had been killed by Merrick, except during the pub scene I could not find him there either. He just vanishes once they reach England.
