This needs a proper Blu-ray widescreen release.
I hate the 4:3 DVD. I bought a Laserdisc in widescreen and I am making a widescreen DVD out of that.

I agree. Very underrated film and regarded as foreign So the likelihood of getting a proper Blu-Ray release is slim to none.

In the meantime, I have my homemade widescreen DVD-R direct from laserdisc.

It's available in glorious HD and widescreen online.
