"Red October" and "Enemy Below"

Both "The Hunt for Red October" and "The Enemy Below" rank high on my list of favorite movies. When last watching "Red October" when Marko Ramius (Sean Connery) calculated the seconds as the air-dropped torpedo approached, I recalled a similar scene from "Enemy Below" when Capt. Murrell (Robert Mitchum) calculated the likely approach of the torpedo before he swung his ship out of harm's way. Then the other similarities came to mind: Both Ramius and Murrell are widowers; Ramius and von Stohlberg (Curt Jurgens) have close relationships with their #2 (Capt Borodin (Sam Neill) and Schwaffer (Theodor Bikel), both of whom later die. Did "Red October's" John McTiernan receive vibes from Dick Powell, director "Enemy Below?" Who knows? None of the above detracts from either movie and similarities abound in movies of like genres. Enjoy them both.
