What would have made this movie good?

I think Hopper did a fantastic job of channeling a 1950's pot boiler. And that is a big compliment. Few directors would have the courage to try and fewer could pull it off.

The visual style is unique and works very well. Look at Johnson's outfits; they should not work, but do.

I find the movie boring. I struggle thru it even the acting is good. Even Johnson, who I believe is one note.

What could Hopper had done to make the pacing better?
