Location of very first scene

Does anyone know where the very first scenes are filmed, of the car driving along what appears to be sand dunes? Doesn't look like the Austin area to me. Thanks!

Did someone suggest it was supposed to be near Austin? I don't remember any such suggestion in the movie. it certainly is not the Texas Hill Country. It looks more like far west Texas near El Paso.

Monahans Sandhills State Park closer to Midland. This was suppose to be Austin but for the small town look they did most of the exteriors in Taylor 20 miles east. The Yellow Rose is an Austin landmark and I lived just around the corner at the time this was made but they never did any exterior shooting there. Taylor would never allow a stripper bar so they must have shot that in Austin. The pool scene is Hamilton Pool absolutely beautiful preserved spring and waterfall just west of Austin. The house scenes are Hyde Park area of Austin just north of the University of Texas at Austin. In the scene the girls house you can 32nd St which I lived on for 6 years just 8 blocks west.

What is funny I never knew about this movie until I caught it on IFC a month ago.

I appreciate the information. I had also wondered where the opening scene was filmed. I saw the car lot was filmed at Louie Mueller's BBQ joint in Taylor. When you use google street view the parking lot is just that...I assume they built the two office buildings for the film. The building they used for the Yellow Rose is green now and looks like a Mexican grocery.

I am going to get to Taylor and re-create the scene where Johnson's character says, "hot day idinit?" "It's my personal favorite." Then get a bbq sanich. Again...appreciate the info.
